How We Are Helping Women and Children In 2020

February 06, 2020

Women and Children First, with the support of our donors and partners, will be helping more women and children survive and thrive. This includes starting new projects in some of the world’s poorest communities.

This year we will:

  • Continue our projects running women’s health groups, improving maternal and newborn health, in Ethiopia and Uganda. These are in collaboration with Doctors with Africa CUAMM, Comic Relief, The National Lottery Community Fund and the Vitol Foundation. Between them, they will reach over 170,000 people

  • Start a new project in Ethiopia, together with Marie Stopes International and the Waterloo Foundation, helping women and girls, particularly the most disadvantaged, to improve their Sexual Reproductive Health and achieve their potential

  • Begin a new project in Bangladesh with University College London, exploring how to use women’s health groups to prevent childhood injuries and deaths in rural areas.

While death from infectious diseases have declined, deaths due to injuries are increasing. 40% of children under 5 die from drowning. These groups are coming together to prevent these deaths

  • Work with the KEMRI-Wellcome Research programme in Kenya to design community activities that engage men in child health and nutrition, given the importance of gender roles and relations in the country

  • Implementing a number of small new projects in Uganda, to address adolescent health problems, identified by the women’s health groups.

These include projects to improve menstrual hygiene. Through teaching girls how to make reusable sanitary pads, the project is aiming to help over 2,000 girls stay in school. This will also be reducing their risk of health problems and being locked in the vicious cycle of poverty.

Work will also be undertaken to make health facilities more youth friendly

  • Supporting our partner Doctors with Africa CUAMM, enabling the team in Tanzania to improve community engagement in health and wellbeing, encouraging people to get the quality of healthcare they need and is available

Women and Children First is always seeking new donors and supporters to help us reach even more women and children, helping them survive and thrive in the world’s poorest communities. If you think you can help, please contact us.
